I had been serving with Surfing the Nations in Hawai’i for several months. It had been my third return to be with them in 3 years. I attended Surfers Church, which at that point was being held in what is now the Coffee shop. There were a team of ministers from a church named Bluewater Mission. I had never heard of it before. They shared about their justice ministries. I was intrigued. At the end of the service they prayed for us, and shared prophetic/encouraging words with us. This man pointed to me and said “You, you have it. Whatever it is, you have it. You have a call of missions on your life. If God called you to Africa, you would pack your bags and go.” Everyone in the room gasped at the accuracy. I laughed becuase I never wanted to be a missionary in Africa, I was moving to Bangladesh.

Later that year I was in Bangladesh and spent a night at a home in the capital city. I had been to Bangladesh before, but this was the first time in the capital city. A friend and I were visiting a friend, who was staying with a friend who was house sitting for a family from Hawai’i. Low and behold, there on the wall was that guy from the church service who had given me that word.

When I returned to Hawai’i, after a few months, “that guy” and some others who had also been at the prophecy night came to church again. I was so excited to tell him that I had seen his photo in Bangladesh. I learned his name was John Roberts. From there I began attending an ohana group, as I was still involved in the First Assemblies of God Church in our town.

This is the story of how I joined Blue Water Mission, a church that would so deeply impact my spiritual walk and contiue to bring encouragement to me over 10 years later. I’ve never met a church like BWM, with such a strong message to “try”. Their church motto is to just try; try to heal someone, try to make a difference, try to do good in the world. And I love it.

Every few months I find myself returning to BWM sermons because they encourage me so greatly. Kossi had the kids yesterday doing errands, and so as I cleaned the house I listened to this podcast and was so, so so deeply encouraged. It’s so simple. We are called to not live a lukewarm life. We are called to create waves, to go against the grain of culture, to follow in the footsteps of the most radical man on earth.

“Going with the flow, drifting with culture, just doing what the atmosphere and culture tell you to do is terrible.”

If we are have impactful moments each day that encourage people to walk closer to Jesus, we need to set intentions, routines and rhythms of doing this.

What are you doing today to impact someone’s life to draw closer to Jesus?
